Go For A Sunny Bike Ride On The Silver Strand Bikeway In Coronado

Cruise the bay and oceanfront at a leisurely pace

About Silver Strand Bikeway

On any given sunny day in San Diego, which is most days of the year outside of May and June, a bike ride is one of the best things you can do with your time. And if you want to experience a classic San Diego bike ride the trip around Coronado Island is about as good as you can get. Your best option is either bring your own bike across the ferry or rent a bike from Holland’s Bicycles at the ferry landing site. Single bikes are $40. $50 for a bike with a child seat.

Follow the Silver Strand Bikeway around the island – from the ferry landing start biking in the direction of the Coronado bridge – you will go under the bridge, along the Coronado Municipal Golf Course on Glorietta Blvd then along the water until the Hotel Del – it is about three miles from ferry landing to hotel. If you want to keep going, the bike path leads far down the Silver Strand (the strip of land connecting Coronado in the north to Imperial Beach in the south). It is seven miles from the hotel to Imperial Beach – decide how far you want to go and just remember, save some for the way back. Unless you are Ethan Hawke from Gattacca.

This entire path is flat.

Spend the day at Hotel Del Coronado or go out onto Coronado Beach for a day in the sun, then head back to drop your bikes off.

A Closer Look

The Bayshore Bikeway (a larger bike path of which our recommendation is a part) was first conjured up in the 1970s. That means it has only taken 50 years for it to not be completed. No, to be fair, much of the bikeway along Silver Strand was completed in the early 80s, with various gaps being filled over the next couple of decades. These bike paths are mostly along abandoned rail lines and it is nice to see these abandoned spaces used for public good.
