We should probably recuse ourselves from writing reviews on desserts because we will consume virtually any dessert that comes our way no matter how good or bad it tastes, but we cannot conceive of recommending a bad cake to a fellow dessert lover. Or, more importantly, not recommending an amazing cake to those without it in their life.

Enter Executive Pastry Chef Jeremy Harville of the Trust Restaurant Group – the maker of the best carrot cake in San Diego (and likely the world). After our first bite several years ago, while sitting at the bar at Trust restaurant, we knew we were in danger of becoming obsessed. And indeed we did, because we have returned to eat this carrot cake dozens of times over the years, even commissioning a full cake for Christmas last year, consumed two people, in one sitting.

This carrot cake has rightfully earned a dedicated spot in our hearts and this is our way to immortalize its flavor.

How much do we like it?

We would have a crisis if it didn’t exist.

Why We Like The Carrot Cake From Trust Restaurant Group

First, the the flavor and texture are on point. It is perfectly sweet, spiced, and moist (we had to use that word at least once). It is fluffy but decadent at the same time, with a perfect amount of layered vanilla frosting and a light coating of crushed pecans. And all of that deliciousness basks in a small pool of rich salted caramel that serves to only heighten the decadence. Also, it has bits of real carrot in there, so you know it’s good.

Second, you will not go hungry because a single slice is more than enough for two people.

Thirdly, it is consistently amazing. Whether we ate it at Trust restaurant, Cardellino’s restaurant, or on the couch at home, the quality and taste is never sacrificed. Baking is an art form in the culinary world that is not to be undermined and to consistently produce this quality of dessert over many years at many different locations speaks volumes to its masterful recipe and execution.

Finally, the friendly service and cozy ambiance of the Trust Restaurant Group locations make it all the more enjoyable. Nobody wants a fine piece of cake served with attitude. Head to Cardellino’s or Trust for a date night and share the best dessert in San Diego together, or post up at the bar alone with a glass of wine and indulge yourself. No matter what, you and your carrot cake will be in a good place.

Final Word

We have tried many other carrot cakes in San Diego, and continue to do so, but none have compared to the one from Trust Restaurant Group.

We will leave you with a picture worth a thousand words (or one carrot cake).
