The South Park neighborhood in San Diego is a self-contained quaint, walkable, lovely section of the city that is low key one of the best places to visit. South Park packs local stores, high quality restaurants, bustling bars, and natural beauty into a tight space, just east of Balboa Park.
Centered on Fern Street, South Park, like its neighboring and larger North Park, was one of the first streetcar suburbs of San Diego, where families could buy a Crafstman Bungalow and get some breathing room away from the hustle and bustle of downtown. Over the decades, it has evolved into one of the most sought after places to live in the city, which contributes to its quite high cost of living now. But the neighborhood remains locally minded, community focused, and very welcoming to all comers.
South Park has two commercial hubs that are technically within walking distance of each other, but maybe just out of range for comfort - one is at Juniper and Fern St stretching south, and the other is around Beech and 30th St. Both areas are a lovely mix of calm tree lined streets with delicious local restaurants and bars with local mom and pop shopping alongside.
