Our Mission

To provide unique and useful itineraries that guide locals and visitors to their ideal experience in San Diego.

Why We Do This

It is hard to get good advice these days.

It is not hard to get advice (see: Yelp, TripAdvisor, mommy blogs, travel blogs, influencers, advertisements, paid magazine articles), but it is hard to get good advice. We hope to offer good advice. We are not paid for what we do, we do not recommend anything we do not already do ourselves or would not recommend to our friends, and we take time with our considerations. You may not agree with our advice, but you can trust that it is genuine.

Who We Are

We are locals living in San Diego. We are not experts on anything. We have day jobs. But we are modern treasure hunters who value authentic places and activities that are worth the time and effort. It doesn’t take much to get us off the couch, but it takes a bit to get us off the couch a second time. With that in mind, let’s introduce ourselves.

Oscar Wallis
A jack of all trades, Oscar has lived in many places and has acquired an immense amount of knowledge in a variety of practices including medicine, philosophy, and writing. He also has the tenacity to find a happy path in life no matter the obstacles. This, paired with his many talents, has enabled Charles to find the best in places and people. Hence, why he’s excited to contribute to When In San Diego.

Jeremy Wasko
A conservationist, web designer and explorer, Jeremy has re-established himself in many places. This necessitates a lot of discovery. The discovery of new neighborhoods, restaurants, activities, events, and social groups. He’s become quite good at this, and is more than happy to be part of When In San Diego and divulge his methods for exploring a new place.

Our Process

Any establishment, location, dish, or activity that we write about we have tried ourselves, often numerous times. We do not post a review unless we have been to the establishment at least three times. Most of these places are just our own personal local favorites, happened upon organically in our exploration of San Diego.

We are not paid or sponsored by anyone other than our completely unrelated jobs. We try to be as objective and broad as possible in our recommendations, but we will always bring ourselves, with our inherent tastes and biases, with us everywhere we go. Our bias would probably best be described as tending toward local, unfranchised, community-focused, and environmentally conscious, but obviously this is not everything. McDonalds is good sometimes too.

Our content quality will not be sacrificed for the sake of ranking. Every review, itinerary, and list on this website is written with the intent of providing genuinely engaging, useful content that will help you find the best of San Diego. That “best” will mean something different to everyone. But “When In San Diego” will guide you there.
